Description
Fandoms/Fictions Involved:
Fiction: Split Siren
Character: Aeren Salinger
Fandom: Doctor Who
Character: 11th Doctor
After the sweet candy has disappeared
A sad looking little boy
On a cloudless Summer Day
Sunburnt hands and feet
Careless if her white one piece gets dirty
An unconscious paradise
I was listening to Utada Hikaru's "Goodbye Happiness" and this image jumped in my head... my Aeren standing in a field of sunflowers as the TARDIS appears behind her. The Doctor steps out and closes the door. She turns around and beams up at him.
So Goodbye Innocence
We can’t return to those times
When we were naive and energetic
It’s all your fault
I've been experimenting with my Aeren, from the Split Siren fiction (more about her here: [link]) by putting her in different possibilities... even in a dream of traveling with the Doctor. Matt Smith's 11th Doctor to be precise. Goodbye Happiness just struck a note in the friendship between the young teenager and the traveling Time Lord.
Aeren, whose life was changed forever in "Split Siren", in a gist - lost her childhood to war and grew up too early. One day, after the events of "Split Siren", she is caught up in a universal phenomenon where she clashes with the Doctor. She loses her memories, her twin home worlds and he decides to take her away where none of her scarred past exists... Thus, the song expresses the joy of exploration, her time with the Doctor and the experience to become a child again - not having to carry the world on her shoulders. Even if... she knows one day her memories will return, she has to go home and leave the Doctor forever.
So Goodbye Happiness
We can’t return to those times
When we were naive and energetic
But that’s okay
Brain working like crazy...
This is what happens.
